What a busy year!!
Since last December we have had a very busy year culminating in moving into a full time fully matted training centre. A lot of work went into the planning and development of our new home, with a specific matted area as well as a fully functioning strength and conditioning area MY Fitness and Martial Arts will be the home that allows us to grow and develop our talented young people.
Over the course of the year we have competed at the Yorkshire, Cumbrian, Halifax, North East and Tyne Tees Opens as well as the Nissan Invitational. Our association goes from strength to strength with yet more athletes either gaining or pushing for places in the EKF teams. We also had two representatives compete for a place in the Youth Olympics. We finished 5th at the Banzai Cup in Berlin and 7th in the British Invitational.
Our students have been successful throughout the year in competition and gradings, the move allows for us to set dates for gradings and to have them on nights different to training nights.
Senior Grading- 16th December
Sensei Sean and Sensei Phil have both been successful in achieving their 2nd Dan’s. It’s taken both of them longer than either would have like but due to work and family commitments training over the years has been affected. 3 hours of high intensity assessment including basic and combination techniques, 5 kata’s, bunkai, basic blocks, ohyu and kihon’s, pad work and sparring. 3 years until the next and hopefully final grading.
Yanagi Kai Association Championships- 19th November 2017
Another great day out and an early finish despite such a busy day! Results were very positive. Boy’s 6 to 7 Open kumite 1st-Toby Axtell, 3rd- Lucas Smith, 1/4 finalist- Finlay Robertson, Girls 7-8 Kickmaster 2nd- Anna Houseman, Girls 6 to 7 Open Kumite 1st- Anna Houseman, Female Under 4th Kyu Kata 3rd- Rachael Sharp, Female Open Kumite 3rd- Rachael Sharp.
Sensei Mark was awarded his 6th Dan for services to Karate. A very well deserved award for someone who puts 110% into everything he does. Congratulations Sensei.
Manchester Youth Open- 4th November 2017
Our first association Open and what a great day. Anna Houseman, Kim Moran and Lucas Smith all taking part from Mitsuru Yorkshire. Anna came 2nd in the Girls 6-7 Kumite with Kimi coming 3rd in the same category. The girls then teamed up in the under 9 girls teams and came away with 3rd. A good result as both girls still have at least 6 months before turning 8. Lucas fought well in the Boys 6-7 years but went out to a very composed fighter in the quarter finals. He also fought in the Boys under 9 teams but his team went out one match short of a medal.
North of England Open- 22nd October 2017
Well done to Rachael Sharp in her first Open competition, placing 3rd in the 4th Kyu and below Kata and 2nd in the -68Kg Women’s Open Kumite. A disappointing day for Sean in the Veteran’s Kata and Phil, who withdrew on the day due to illness.
October Grading 2017
Our busiest grading yet! Well done to everyone that took part, the standard was very high. For those of you that didn’t grade this time, keep working hard and remember that when you gain your next grade that it has been earned through hard work and sweat, not simply given based on the length of time you have been training.
Ippon Magazine Jordan Thomas Autumn Course 2017
WOW, what a weekend!
A full weekend of Kumite, Kata and a bit of strength and conditioning thrown in for good measure! Leading the kumite sessions was current WKF -67Kg World Champion Jordan Thomas, he was joined by Amy Connell (K1 Silver Medallist and current Scottish International), and coaches Satinder Sehra and Dean Lowe, both of whom are very experienced both as former competitors and now with their own squads. Natalie Payne (current England International and Yanagi Kai representative) was in charge for the Kata sessions. It was a great opportunity to train with a number of highly respected individuals and a chance to bring home some new ideas.
It’s fair to say that following 11 1/2 hours training from 12noon on the Saturday to 3pm on the Sunday Sensei Sean’s legs didn’t know what had hit them. A great weekend, highly recommended for next year! Sensei’s Sean and Phil will be the first names on the list.

An excellent day out had by all with a great medal count.
Fantastic results in the Boy’s and Girls 6-7 year olds with all 3 girls medalling and Lucas loosing out on flags 2-1 in the semi final.
A great Men’s Kata final with Mitsuru Yorkshire Instructors going head to head with Sensei Phil winning 3 flags to 2. The pair were denied the chance to meet in the Men’s Open Weight Kumite final when a late injury to Sensei Sean while leading 1-0 led to a 2-1 defeat. Despite what turned out to be two broken ribs, Sensei Sean still fought in the Veteran’s Open Weight securing 3rd.

North East Karate Open
A good day at the North East Open in Darlington with some good performances from Mitsuru Yorkshire fighters.
Lucas Smith finished a very credible 2nd in the 6-7 year old’s Kumite, getting through some tough fights on the way culminating in a tough, physical fight in the final against a very sharp fighter. Good progress made in a number of areas.
Maisie Clark came through some difficult fights to reach the quarter finals of the girls 12-13 year old’s Kumite, before coming up against a very polished fighter (and the eventual winner!). A good second competition for Maisie following her return to the sport.
Phil Moran came through in the Senior Men’s Open Weight Kumite, loosing to the eventual winner but placing 3rd. That’s two podium finishes in two competitions following his return to the mat.
